At first, I thought Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael was getting to be redundant for Winona Ryder at
this point.
It's because she had done a similar role in plenty of cult films such as
Beetlejuice, Heathers,
Great Balls of Fire!, Mermaids, and
Edward Scissorhands. After a while, I began to realize she's
turning in a very strong performance. The movie got better because of her and the catchy story revolving
around the eponymous star who ultimately never showed up.
There are other standouts from the secondary cast: Jeff Daniels, Thomas Wilson Brown, and Laila Robins. For
the longest time, I guessed that Dinky was Roxy's daughter, but that speculation ended promptly when Denton
broke the news to her. Funnily, when he explained to her at another time how Roxy became famous, it was
because of a music video. That's actually true for Tawny Kitaen by appearing in several, most notably
"Here I Go Again," for Whitesnake.
All in all, fans of Winona Ryder will like Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael.
