Two films came out during 1997 for Paul Schrader: Affliction and
Touch.
Everybody knows about the first one which received a lot of accolades, but the second never showed up on radar.
That's why it took me so long to know of its existence. The cast is extremely strong which sends a clear
message: this is about acting. However, the writing is a bit off and thus needs more polish.
The true standouts are Skeet Ulrich and Bridget Fonda. I just can't get over the uncanny resemblance the
former has to Johnny Depp while the latter gives one of the best performances of her career. Christopher
Walken never fails to deliver, but Tom Arnold is a downer by playing a ridiculous character.
Because of Paul Schrader, it's about conflict with religion. Hardcore
and The Last Temptation of Christ covered that in depth.
This time, Touch is about exploiting miracles. Juvenal was okay with it at first but decided that life
was worth living for in a different avenue after meeting Lynn. August gets in their way because of his insistence
on the Bible being followed to a T, but that becomes tiresome after a while.
All in all, Touch is a nice little film about religion.
