I can't believe the negative reviews and how little attention The Men's Club had received.
This is a quite funny movie that's about male bonding, being on the same level as
Bachelor Party and
That Championship Season. I love the screenplay penned by
Leonard Michaels which is based on his book. If women were offended by what
they saw like how Stockard Channing's character was, then so be it. I've found the whole thing to be quite
accurate and so much better than My Dinner with Andre.
What a cast which includes five Oscar-nominated thespians. The best performances come from Roy Scheider,
Richard Jordan, David Dukes, and Harvey Keitel. Frank Langella, Craig Wasson, and Treat Williams round out
the rest. Their dialogues are rich, and spontaneity is reached at its zenith when Richard Jordan's character
decides to have fun with throwing knives in his house.
I agree that the movie sort of loses its way when everybody is at the whorehouse. Leonard Michaels
could've written a better act that's similar to what took place earlier just to keep the philosophical
talks going. Instead, men are reduced to their base forms by being angry jerks and looking for sex.
All in all, if you hate chick flicks with passion, you'll love The Men's Club.
