Dustin Hoffman has appeared in a lot of ridiculously bad movies.
Some of them include John and Mary,
Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?,
American Buffalo, and the most infamous of them all:
Ishtar. Added to the list so effortlessly is Sphere.
While watching it, I had no fucking clue and doubted anyone involved did, either. Many times, it felt like
they were showing off their pseudo-intellect through dialogue. Whether or not any of the characters played by
Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson was an alien is meaningless. Getting on my nerves
is whenever "Jerry" or "Norman" is uttered which turns out to be 47 and 85 times, respectively.
The film is so poorly edited that I've laughed at their current positions whether they're standing in the ship
or swimming outside of it which can be instant from one shot to another. How about these scenes
with jellyfish and eggs that don't appear again later? It's also strange to see so few people working on
a major military project.
Nearing the end, Dustin Hoffman said something that became an understatement of the film when he
wanted the group to forget the sphere ever existed. I was like, "You just read my mind." So I did after
seeing it in 2003 and will do so after I complete this review. By the way, Dustin Hoffman did hit his head
accidentally against the table during the underwater scene, and I thought that was funny.
All in all, Rod Serling could've come up with better material than the rubbish in Sphere.
