"Ladies and gentlemen, direct from Hell, Spinal Tap!!" Genius is written all over this film, one of the
funniest ever. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer are brilliant. Many viewers thought the
English band was real, and they got fooled big time. That's how convincing these actors were. To think of
the movie is to think of the timeless quotes and scenes.
Thanks to Aaron Sorkin's outstanding screenplay, the performances are thoroughly outstanding. As Colonel
Nathan Jessep, Jack Nicholson has a Oscar-winning clip when he yelled after being pressed by Tom Cruise:
"You can't handle the truth!"
The Princess Bride is memorable for being a great fantasy picture which was shot on location in England
and Ireland. What I love about it is the setup: the storytelling format, the voice-over
narration, the actual tale, and the occasional interruptions by the grandson. They all make the movie special.
In fact, The Princess Bride is the best example to demonstrate the love of books.
What the heck was everybody talking about??? North is not that bad! It's a kid's movie. Why can the
critics understand that? Playing out like a fable, the story is funny, creative, and well-edited with many
witty lines. Even the stereotypes are true. Many kids have harbored a fantasy of wanting better parents for
some reason or another, and it's perfectly normal. What an ensemble cast.
The American President has great acting, and Michael Douglas is in supreme form. In fact, he looks
presidential. Annette Bening is fantastic. Even more interesting is the introduction of two legislative pieces
in the film: the anti-crime bill to ban assault weapons and the environmental bill to reduce carbon dioxide
emissions by 20%. Neither has come to fruition to this day.
Ghosts of Mississippi is the story of justice for civil rights activist Medgar Evers' assassination and
is a great history lesson. When I say the last part, Rob Reiner actually followed the events as they happened.
So, kudos to him for doing that, a rarity in Hollywood films. Matthew Mungle and Deborah La Mia Denaver were
rewarded with an Oscar nomination for James Woods' makeup work.
