Return to Glennascaul (1952)

7/26: Orson Welles did a couple of film shorts in the early 50's, and one of them is Return to Glennascaul that was Oscar-nominated.

The set up is ingenious because Orson Welles gets to play himself and also be the narrator. After departing the soundstage of Othello, he goes for a drive somewhere in Ireland and picks up a stranded motorist named Sean Merriman who tells him a spooky ghost story.

At first, I thought, "Why not Orson Welles play Sean?" But there's a catch to tie up the film short very well by getting people to disbelieve they actually saw Orson Welles in the flesh. When a circuitous route is presented to him at the end, he comically drives away, not wanting to be part of it anymore.

All in all, Return to Glennascaul is a pleasant diversion, and having Orson Welles on board goes a long way.
