Night of Dark Shadows (1971)

7/26: After finishing House of Dark Shadows, I quickly went into Night of Dark Shadows.

The difference is mostly night and day. One thing is for sure: the acting is improved. But that's where it stops. The story wasn't getting anywhere until about the 40th minute mark when there was an explanation of the witch hanging. Thereafter, the movie became focused, making for an easy viewing.

However, what's lost is the trademark gothic atmosphere. Sure, there are darkness and shadows, but the feel isn't the same. The cast is made up of nobodies once again although there are some returning thespians from House of Dark Shadows for, I believe, different roles. It's interesting to see the ending which would be done again, but in a more dramatic fashion, in Burnt Offerings, a much superior suspense picture by Dan Curtis.

All in all, Night of Dark Shadows is an okay sequel.
