Cousins is one of the greatest romantic and also funniest movies made, being the main precursor of Hugh
Grant's British classic Four Weddings and a Funeral. Electrifying is the chemistry between Ted Danson
and Isabella Rossellini. And the rest of the cast is impeccable, giving the film a lively pace.
Tigerland is An Officer and a Gentleman minus the romance. It would be easy to say Colin Farrell
made the movie, but let's give credit where it's due: director Joel Schumacher got the best out of everybody in
all aspects. Hence, the performances, the editing, and the cinematography are outstanding. Erroneously labeled
as war picture, it's rather about survival in basic training before being shipped out...nothing more.
When I thought Hollywood had nothing original to offer these days, here comes Phone Booth. This may be
the best performance of Colin Farrell's career. Who would have thought the premise of an actor being
stuck in the phone booth for over an hour could be so exciting? The idea was originally pitched to Alfred Hitchcock
during the 60's, but he and Larry Cohen couldn't figure out a workable angle as to why the guy had to stay
there for so long.
Shot on location in Santa Cruz, California, The Lost Boys is an extremely stylish, sexy vampire picture
that ranks one of the best in Joel Schumacher's oeuvre. Everybody is famous for appearing in it: Jason Patric,
Corey Haim, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, Corey Feldman, Brooke McCarter, Alex Winter, Jamison Newlander, Billy
Wirth, and Chance Michael Corbitt.
8MM isn't a bad film overall. Having Nicolas Cage on board largely helps. Believe it or not, 8MM
would be almost the last good role of his career; he hit the final high point in Adaptation. The rest of
his oeuvre from there on has been a series of bombs that are mostly released on direct-to-video DVDs.
Unlike many Joel Schumacher's pretentious artsy pictures that were loaded with 80's clichés, A Time to Kill
is a serious courtroom picture that may be the best adaptation of a John Grisham novel ever. A big treat is the
number of outstanding performances turned in by the cast. Most of all, Matthew McConaughey shows what a real
talent he is.
