It's difficult to say which is better: The Mighty Ducks or the sequel.
Both have an equal share of positives and negatives but in different ways. For starters,
D2: The Mighty Ducks is higher in quality and more polished and has better hockey scenes overall. But
it's so corporate, lacking in feeling, and cheesy. There are a lot of weird things, too.
One is the Ducks identity. So...Team USA is mostly comprised of players from a pee-wee team for one city? If
the Mighty Ducks was so good, it shouldn't have had a hard time beating the Hawks. After the national team is
formed, how is it possible the rest of the players feel the same spirit given that they never played for
the previous team and wouldn't know much about it?
Junior Goodwill Games? Ha! It never existed in the first place and wouldn't make the national news. The
adult version was Ted Turner's brainchild that failed horribly because it lost money, closing in 2001 after
fifteen years. Imagine my surprise when one of the hockey teams was Trinidad and Tobago. Memo to Disney: just
stop when it comes to the promotion of diversity; hockey is a white man's sport. Plus, it's expensive as hell.
There's a viable country called Iceland??? I went on the internet to see if it actually had a population
which turned out to be roughly 250,000 at the time. Therefore, Iceland became an easy choice to be the bad
guy. In comparison, Italy, Germany, and Trinidad and Tobago are faceless and bland.
To my dismay, many original members of the Ducks team return. The worst of them all remains Brandon Adams
as Jesse. After being promised by the coach of getting the chance to play, Julie never did apart
from the final play in the penalty shootout of the championship game.
The Junior Goodwill Games caused confusion for me, prompting this question, "What's supposed to be the age range?"
Many players on the Iceland looked substantially bigger than almost everybody on Team USA. Aaron Lohr who
plays Portman is clearly too old for the game. Elden Ryan Ratliff as Fulton is another.
All in all, D2: The Mighty Ducks is an okay choice if you want to watch a hockey film.
