Based on Bill Bryson's popular book, A Walk in the Woods was finally made seventeen years later.
It's about attempting to walk the full length of the Appalachian Trail which is 2,200 miles long from Springer
Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Anyone can do it, but not many have succeeded. It takes a lot of
planning, logistics, and hard work. Injury, whether it's an accident or overuse, is also a major factor.
When I saw Robert Redford and Nick Nolte embarking on the journey, I was like, "Hm, too old and completely out
of shape." If they did it during the 70's, then sure. No matter what, it's a very funny movie. The script is solid
but tapers off in the last thirty minutes or so and can use more encounters with random people on the trail.
It may be Robert Redford's film, but Nick Nolte steals the show. The latter is a comedian who's full of witty
lines. One of the most hilarious is when he got on the top bunk and fell through, landing on Robert Redford who
thought he won the day by switching the pillows. There's a supporting actress who deserves a mention, and it's
Kristen Schaal as the know-it-all motormouth.
All in all, A Walk in the Woods is a unique, entertaining hiking movie.
