I really want to heap a lot of praise on American Me because of Edward James Olmos who makes his
directorial debut.
But I just can't. Sending a message about racial self-destruction, American Me is the Chicano
version of The Godfather, but this time, it's told from an additional
perspective: inside prison. However, Blood In, Blood Out is
superior and devastating in many aspects.
The acting is solid. I've enjoyed Edward James Olmos' performance but don't care much for his character, the
story, or the gang life. Because of the scene when Santana was raped while in the juvenile hall (there are
others, too), members of the Mexican Mafia, whom the movie is based on, got enraged and therefore ordered the
murder of three film consultants. They also dispatched a contract to have Edward James Olmos "whacked," but
the rumor is that he canceled it by paying them off. Yet the other three didn't get lucky.
All in all, American Me didn't move me, but it's a good film nevertheless.
